To paint a wall dark red do I use a gray primer or red-tinted primer?

I am going to paint the bottom half of a room a dark red (Satin Accent Color – Latex) and need advice. I read other similar “Answers” here and both seem credible. Some say use gray primer and others say use red-tinted primer (the same as the red you’re using). I would like any further advice anyone can give me. It would be most appreciated. Oh, and I already knew red was difficult to paint but chose to anyway. LOL.

When painting either the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) or any really dark colors, it’s always better to use a tinted primer. The best solution is to use a primer tinted to match your paint, thereby cutting down on the number of coats you’ll need and saving $$$.

Since you’re painting red, definitely go with the red tinted primer. I only use grey tinted primer when painting in black, charcoal or dark grey.

Red isn’t difficult to paint if you use the red tinted primer!
